It is with deep regret that we are informing members of the passing of two long standing members of the Welsh hockey family.

Alan Carter passed away on 31st December and will be sorely missed by all that knew him across the hockey world. He was a renowned FIH umpire and international official and continued his love of umpiring within Wales being a past President of the WHUA. He was a Life Member of WHUA and was always willing to assist in helping the younger umpires progress through the various levels

He also took on the role of President of the Welsh Hockey Association (WHA) after having been Vice-Chairman.  Alan was Vice-Chairman of the Welsh Hockey Union (WHU) following the merger of the Men’s and Women’s Associations.  He was a Life Member of WHU / HW

Alan loved his club hockey and was a long-standing member of his local club, Penarth. One of life’s gentlemen, Alan was somebody who could always be turned to for advice, both on and off the pitch.

Viv Davies also passed away over the last few days and his contribution to hockey in the South Wales area cannot be underestimated. Having spent a number of years at City Hall HC he moved to Newport HC where he spent considerable years as a valued umpire and committee member. Viv also worked on the international scene when he was appointed as Manager of the U-18 Boys squad but he will probably be best known for his meticulous organisation and planning behind the invitational club, The Vandals, a South Wales select touring and social team.

Our deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of both Alan and Viv.

Alan’s funeral will be held on on Tuesday 23rd January at St John Baptist Church 26 South Road, Sully CF64 5TG at 3 p.m. and then at Cardiff and Glamorgan  Crematorium, Port Road East, Barry CF62 9PX at 4 p.m. Family flowers only. Donations in lieu if desired to British Heart Foundation, Lyndon Place, 2096 Coventry Road, Sheldon B26 3YU

Viv’s funeral will be held on Monday 22 January, service at St Mark’s Church, Gold Tops, Newport at 11.30 followed by private committal. Family flowers only please. Donations if desired payable to Velindre Fundraising may be sent c/o Tovey Bros, 9/11 Cardiff Road, Newport NP20 2EH

..Really sad to hear the news about Alan and Viv. Knew Alan since I came to Wales , always had good chat and laugh on and off the pitch. My sympathies go to both families.
